Piazza delle Erbe Verona

English
When tourists come in Italy one of the first things they always appreciate are the historical squares. In Verona, as in many other important cities of art there are a lot of areas in the open air where people use to stay during the day and the night because the good climate encouraged them to meet with each other. Verona has many beautiful squares and many historical periods are visible thanks by the buildings and remains that are everywhere around these places.

A day shoot of Piazza Erbe, Verona

I want to start this post with Piazze delle Erbe (Erbe square) because this is the former local Roman forum, where Verona came to life. During roman times this square was the center of city life and we can say that even now this place maintain the same role. In fact the Erbe square is the site of a local market and it's also a meeting place and the site of many administration's offices.
The square is surrounded by important buildings like Mazzanti houses with wonderful frescos on the walls and in the center of this public space there is an important monument of Verona, a fountain, built using a roman statue during the Scaligeri period named "Madonna Verona".

On the far side of the square there are the 14th century Gardello Tower and the Baroque Maffei palace. The courtyard of the Palazzo del Comune leads on to the Lamberti Tower where you can enjoy one of the best view over the city center.

If you are in Verona for your holidays, Piazza Erbe is the perfect place to take an aperitif during the evening or also for a coffee sitting outside on a table of an elegant bar. In the Erbe square many locals use to stay and it is considered the "Veronese" square.

If you come to visit Verona and you like to find accommodation near the Erbe square I suggest you two places to stay:
  • b&b Corte delle Pigne - a smart bed and breakfast in a 14th century palace. This is for sure the best accommodation if you like to stay in an elegant place, but spending less. The owner, Elisabetta is always very helpful and gentle - double room suite starting from 80€ per night.
  • b&b Delle Erbe - this is probably the most elegant bed and breakfast of Verona, in an historical palace of roman origins, a charming location in a position where not even the 5 star hotels are based - double room 160€ per night.
