Italy - An Award Winning Destination

It will come as no surprise, but in an award ceremony by the Daily & Sunday Telegraph Travel Awards 2011, Italy was again nominated "Favourite European Country" by 23,000 polled newspaper readers.

But it doesn’t stop there, the Hotel Villa D'Este in Cernobbio on Lake Como was nominated as a "Favourite Hotel Worldwide", and the beautiful city of Venice was runner up to New York as "Favourite City Worldwide".

This great news means there’s never been a better time to visit - spring and summer are always popular times, and after receiving these awards there will be even more eager visitors. However, the winter also holds some magic delights, shorter queues and in some cases, outstanding offers too.

Verona is just over an hour from Venice by train, so why not plan ahead and book a hotel to celebrate Venice Carnevale. The hotels in Venice are packed to capacity during carnival, but choose to stay in Verona and travel in, and not only do you get to experience the excitement of masked revellers, but you can escape the city and enjoy a relaxing evening in the beautiful city of Verona as a bonus.

The train is direct, there’s no need to change, and the service is frequent. The slower regional trains can’t be prebooked, but buying a ticket is easy and there are at least two services per hour; if you want to use the quicker Frecciabianca trains, these can be pre booked. You can check out the timetable and book online at Trenitalia, just click on the flag at the top of the screen for the English version. When you arrive at Venice Mastre station it's just a short water taxi ride along the canals to the centre, it couldn’t be more convenient.

What can you expect from Carnevale? Carnevale in Venice is the equivalent to Carnival in Rio but on a slightly smaller scale and with lots more water! In Venice, you will see masked men and women dressed in costume parading the streets; it’s not just for locals, if you want to join in that’s ok, even the gondolier’s take part. There are special events, concerts, games, and with around 30,000 people in the city its best to plan well ahead of time.

Venice was voted runner up as the worlds most popular city, find out why during Carnevale, or at any time of the year.
